John E. Lopis, Ph.D. * Ginny
Michel-Lopis, M.A. Principals
John and Ginny Lopis are
founders of JGL inc., one of the foremost spa design, development and
management teams in North America. With their extensive background in both the
academic community and in resort spa design and operations, the Lopises bring a
unique combination of proven talents and expertise to their
projects.
After receiving a doctorate in program design from Michigan
State University, John Lopis was a professor in the college of education at
Michigan State for 12 years, specializing in educational psychology and
interpersonal communication. While at the university, Dr. Lopis became one of
the leading developers of interpersonal process facilitation skills, which JGL
now uses in all phases of their work. Ms. Michel-Lopis was an educator of
English and journalism for six years, and has a Master's Degree from Michigan
State, also in educational program design.
With their background in
program design and development, and their personal belief in the importance of
a healthy lifestyle, the Lopises decided in 1981 to apply their program design
skills to the concept of lifestyle management, especially in the resort
environment.
They did not, however, make a direct transition from
academia to consulting as is often the case. For nearly 10 years, they
dedicated themselves to understanding the operational details of managing
resort properties, and to learning first hand what it takes to create the
highest degree of guest satisfaction
John and Ginny Lopis have both held
top management positions at several of the finest spa resorts in the country.
They have experience in all phases of resort operations and have worked in a
variety of resort settings. They were responsible for the operational and
program criteria which guided facility design and construction, and for
overseeing the positioning, opening and management of one of America's most
exclusive spa resort properties, the $40 million Doral Saturnia International
Spa Resort in Miami.
With Dr. Lopis as general manager and Ms.
Michel-Lopis as director of operations, they managed the launching of this
property from initial construction to complete and successful operation as a
world-class spa resort. Doral Saturnia was the first destination spa resort in
the United States to receive the prestigious AAA Five Diamond Award.
Dr.
Lopis and Ms. Michel-Lopis also served as executive director and director of
human resources and program development, respectively, at the renowned Canyon
Ranch Vacation/Fitness Resort in Tucson, Arizona. There, they developed the
highly publicized Executive Renewal program and other innovative
programs.
In addition, Dr. Lopis was president and Chief Executive
Officer of Topnotch at Stowe, a 100-room luxury resort and spa in Stowe,
Vermont. Ms. Michel-Lopis was vice president and general manager. The Lopises
oversaw all resort operations and the refurbishing of the resort property, as
well as the design, development, construction and management of a new 23,000
square foot luxury spa facility.
Since forming JGL in 1990, as spa
consultants, John and Ginny Lopis have brought numerous properties on line from
ground breaking to the coordination of gala openings as well as creating the
organizational structures and hiring and training entire staffs.
In
1991, John and Ginny Lopis were two of eight founders of the International Spa
Association (ISPA), the first and most prestigious spa association in America.
Dr. Lopis served as Vice President on the first elected Board of Directors.
Today, ISPA's membership includes more than 2,000 spas, resorts and industry
related professionals, representing numerous countries around the
world.
John and Ginny Lopis are considered leading authorities on spa
design, trends, programming and management, and have been widely quoted in more
than 30 consumer and trade publications including USA Today, Vogue, Town
& Country, Travel & Leisure, Food & Wine, Travel Weekly, Lodging,
Spa Management, Hotel Business, American Spa, and more.
In September
2005, John and Ginny Lopis both received one of the highest honors in the spa
industry, ISPA's Spa industry Visionary Award, which recognizes significant
contributions and positive movement of the spa, health and wellness
industry. |
